What actually moves a hashtag into India's Top 10
A breakdown of the timing, seeding, and tracking decisions behind our highest-ranking campaigns — and the ones that didn't make the cut.
Every week someone asks us whether trending is "just volume." It isn't. Volume gets you noticed by the trending algorithm; velocity, diversity and timing are what get you placed — and kept there.
1. Velocity beats total volume
Twitter/X weighs how quickly conversation around a term is growing compared with its normal baseline. Ten thousand posts spread over a day will rarely chart. Five thousand posts in the first twenty minutes usually will.
2. Many voices, not many posts
A thousand posts from fifty accounts looks like a campaign. A thousand posts from eight hundred accounts looks like a conversation. Our highest-ranking pushes had the widest spread of genuine, aged profiles — including verified ones — each saying something slightly different.
3. Pick the window, not just the day
Evenings between 7 and 10 PM IST are crowded with cricket, film and news trends. Late morning on a weekday is often easier to break into and holds better. We plan every campaign around what else is likely to be trending at the same time.
What didn't work
- Hashtags longer than about 18 characters — people mistype them and the volume splits.
- Launching the push after the announcement instead of with it.
- Copy-pasted posts. They get filtered, and they read badly to real users.
If you're planning a launch and want to know whether a trend push makes sense for your timeline, tell us the date — we'll give you an honest answer.
